Nisei Veterans to Honor Admiral Harris
Saturday, April 21
Hale Koa Hotel

The Military Intelligence Service Veterans Club is joining nisei veterans and Japanese community organizations to honor Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr., head of the Pacific Command, on his retirement from the military. Harris has been endorsed by the Administration for the position of U.S. Ambassador to Australia.

Admiral Harris’s wife, Bruni Bradley, will also be honored. Ms. Bradley is a retired Navy officer and a member of the board of directors of the Military Child Education Coalition.

The luncheon will be held on Saturday, April 21, at the Hale Koa Hotel’s DeRussy Hall. Doors open at 10:30 a.m.; the luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $50 per person.

Because the planning committee needs a “guaranteed” head count from each organization by March 2, please email with your number as soon as possible. A registration form for the luncheon will be our next newsletter.

RSVP deadline for sending your registration form and payment to 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans is March 28.

Okinawan Peace Exhibit Opens February 1
February 1 to March 5
Weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; closed weekends and holidays
100th Infantry Battalion Veterans Clubhouse
520 Kamoku Street

The 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans is again hosting an exhibit of artwork, poetry, and essays about peace created by children living in Okinawa. It is on loan from the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum. There will also be a display from the museum on several Military Intelligence Service veterans and a display from the 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans Club on community service projects in support of Okinawa.

Admission is free and the exhibit is open to the public. Limited parking is available at the clubhouse. The artwork and writings depict the harsh realities of war, so the exhibit may not be appropriate for children age 10 and under. Curator Naomi Harata and assistant curator Narumi Arakaki of the Okinawa museum will be at the clubhouse during exhibit hours until February 5.

“Proof of Loyalty: Kazuo Yamane and the Nisei Soldiers of Hawaii,” the documentary featured at the Hawaii International Film Festival, will be available for viewing in the board room at the same time as the exhibit.

Questions may be directed to Jayne Hirata of the 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans Clubhouse, (808) 946-0272 or <>.

Aloha Sakura Ceremony in Japan, March 10
Saturday, March 10
Maizuru, Japan

The Aloha Sakura Preservation Society of Maizuru City in Japan has invited 100th, 442nd, and MIS nisei veterans—especially those MIS nisei who served in Maizuru during the U.S. occupation of Japan—to attend the re-enactment of the planting of cherry trees on March 10 in Maizuru.

MIS veteran Fujio “Wymo” Takaki donated 100 seedlings to the Maizuru government to help rebuild the impoverished town and uplift the spirits of its people.

Although this is very short notice, any MIS Veterans Club members with current U.S. passports who want to join Lawrence Enomoto and his son, Steve, should contact him at (808) 255-8971 or <> and Ann Kabasawa, 100th Infantry Battalion Baker Chapter president, at (808) 781-8540 or <> as soon as possible. Ann and husband Clyde are planning to attend and, as a travel agent, Ann can help with airline and other reservations.
